Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty /// 14 March – 2 August 2015 /// V&A, London
Celebrating the extraordinary creative talent of one of the most innovative designers of recent times, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty was the first and largest retrospective of McQueen’s work to be presented in Europe.
The V&A’s retrospective of the career of Alexander McQueen, Savage Beauty, began its life at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it was a huge hit. Expanded and edited to talk a little more to the city where the designer (1969-2010) was born and learned his craft, it will doubtless be an even bigger smash in London.
Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty looks back at the career of the British fashion designer, who died in 2010, with a larger version of the 2011 exhibition that took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York.
The exhibition will be the first retrospective of McQueen’s work in Europe, and has taken over three of the V&A’s galleries. The extra space allowed the original show to be expanded to include more than 60 additional pieces, supplementing the selection chosen by Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton.
